Anne Kathrin Greiner

Basic Photography I – An Introduction to Photographic Technique

April 11/12, 2015
Weekend-Workshop (english/german)

Digital technology’s rapid development, as well as the medium’s countless fields of application, have largely contributed to the fact that we come in contact, and engage with, photography on a daily basis.
Whether it’s in colour or in black-and-white, a single image or a series, representational or abstract, in our work or in our private life… We are, more than ever, fascinated by the possibility of capturing people, places, objects and situations, to be able to eternalise a fleeting moment and to therefore „hold on“ to it.
Yet in order to start ‘painting with light’, one requires more than a creative eye and a personal visual language – a good understanding and knowledge of the technology is also essential.
We will start by addressing the meaning of technical terms such as ‘aperture’, ‘shutter speed’, ‘ISO’, ‘white balance’, ‘depth of field’ etc. Intuitively accessible visual examples and concrete explanations will help you understand the processes and workings of the camera, as well as the advantages of using of manual settings. As a result, you will be able to consciously control both the formal and the conceptual qualities of your pictures.
The theoretical part of the course is combined with practical exercises, thus enabling you to clearly comprehend and correlate cause and effect. On the second day of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to implement the techniques and settings you have learned on the previous day in a practical assignment. We will subsequently view and discuss the results within the group.
What to bring along to the course:
Camera, storage media, batteries and charger, user manual, laptop with an image editing/viewing programme of your choice, e.g. IrfanView (if available).

The workshop will be held in English and German language in a small group of 6 to 10 participants. All interested applicants should apply by email before April 4, 2015.
